More Wayfinding Feedback

After a great open house last night, there is plenty of feedback to sort through on how to best implement wayfinding along Pacific Avenue.  However, if you weren't able to make it, you still have a few days to provide feedback via this form.

If you can't access the form, please contact me at this link or simply answer the questions below:

1) Regarding vehicular wayfinding, what are your your top three priorities for destinations in each area:
a) Downtown Core
b) Downtown Theater District
c) Downtown UWT
d) Foss Waterway
e) Stadium District
f) Hilltop District
g) Dome District

2) Regarding pedestrian maps, what key locations should be identified on a kiosk at each of the following locations:
a) Pacific Avenue & South 9th Street (SW corner)
b) Pacific Avenue & South 12th Street (West side)
c) Pacific Avenue & South 17th Street (NW corner)

3) Any additional input for future phases of wayfinding in Tacoma?

Once you've got some answers, please send them to Sue O'Neill at the City, Patricia Lecy-Davis at Go Local, and/or David Schroedel at the BIA/Chamber.  If you're feeling extra daring, you could share your thoughts with the world by posting them below.  If you are trying to figure out what this is about, please visit our prior post on the subject.

What consideration is being taken for newer technology? Most people have cell phones and most sold now are smart phones. Are we going to be cutting edge or just have boring signs? Should some kind of mobile technology be used? QR Codes?

Also but about the St Helens District between the Theater District and Stadium? That area seems to have more going on than Stadium these days.

  2. The Tacoma Regional Convention + Visitor Bureau does have a website dedicated to visitors: www.traveltacoma.com

There is what appears to be a decent mobile version of the site, but I'd be curious to hear how well it works for visitors.

I'm unclear on where you see as the St Helens District. My understanding is that St Helens runs from S. 9th to Division. The improvements that occurred from S. 9th to the intersection with S. 7th were labeled as being in the Theater District. Maxwell's is great, but I'm not sure it constitutes its own district.

David, I believe in the downtown planning docs the city recognizes the St. Helens District as 7th to 2nd, Stadium Way to Tacoma Ave. I know Puget Sound Pizza has a sign in their restaurant and The Mix and the Walker Building(where Maxwell's is located) has it as their neighborhood on their websites and their is a Facebook page for the district.

  4. Anonymous, the only time I've seen it mentioned was in a consultant's report. The same report did not recognize any type of Theater District or Stadium District - two areas I've always thought of as districts.

I'm glad to hear people are identifying with the brand. There may need to be some clarity down the road as the Hub identifies itself as being in the Stadium District while your facebook page mentions the Goddess of Commerce as being in the Triangle District(?). Coordinating with the Theater District Association and the Stadium Business District could be helpful here.

To prioritize your list for visitors then, it might look something like:

    Tier 1:
    Tacoma Dome
    Museums
    Main Library

    Tier 2:
    Convention Center
    UW Tacoma

    Tier 3:
    Theater District
    Foss Waterway
    Stadium District
    Hospitals
    Tollefson Plaza

Thanks for your input. That's really helpful.

    Hi David,

An email came last week from the City of Tacoma:

Füdie, right next door to the über deli, STINK Cheese & Meat, is open for bizz. This gourmet kitchen and food store is the latest addition to the St. Helens neighborhood in downtown Tacoma. You will be impressed with Füdie's intriguing selection of gourmet food products, top-of-the-line kitchen tools, wine and hard to find beers. And, if you have yet to try STINK, there is no better time than now! While grabbing lunch or dinner, you can skip over to Füdie or vice versa —they blew a hole through the wall. Read more...
